Does your toddler bite?

                                                          Does you toddler bite?

In light of the recent biting episode by Suarez on the football pitch it got me thinking about the reasons toddlers bite and ways to deal with it.

Reasons for biting
  • Frustration
  • Expressing emotion
  • Experimenting with how their body works.
  • Means of defence
  • Method of control
So you have had that mortifying experience of apologizing to another parent for your child biting. Is there anything you can do to stop it happening again
What can you do?
Firstly after a calm down try and analyse the situation which caused them to bite.
      What to do

  • Intervene: Keep a close eye on your child and act before they get the chance to bite.If you see a situation developing distract their attention or simply remove them to a place of safety. Plan in advance for their behavior.” Children often clench their teeth before they bite – an unmistakable sign. Take the child somewhere quiet to calm down. If a teething child is trying out his or her teeth, find toys to chew and chomp on.
  • Teach them it’s wrong: When your child bites explain that it is wrong and that it hurts.
  • Teach them to express themselves: When things have calmed down, try to help your child find a  way to express their feelings.A hug is a better way to express emotion than a bite.
  • Reduce the effectiveness: When children bite to gain attention, dealing with it is trickier. After the first big talking to, don’t try to continue to reason or explain. Give a firm “no”. “Put your body between victim and biter and turn your back on the biter.Give lots of time to the victim reinforcing to your child that biting is not the best way to get your attention.
  • Praise them for good behavior:When your child is playing nicely be sure to offer positive praise. It's all to easy to just enjoy a rare moments peace but in the long run it is worth the effort.

Why I'm loving the sun...
by the ' Ladies Who List '

  • My dirty laundry basket has emptied dramatically. This has resulted in a fading of the sweaty sock odour that seems to have been lingering upstairs for the past 6 months.
  • The kids, having used up surplus energy playing outside, no longer resemble pit bulls ready to attack.
  • I have achieved so much since the weekend and the the first sighting of sun in 2013. People have commented on my increased productivity in the office, I have stopped being quite so snappy and appear to have regained my lost motivation ( actually I think it was not so much 'lost' but merely 'trapped' under the thermal layers I have been wearing for so long).
  • However, having removed the aforesaid clothing layers, whilst I have certainly added more blubber during this never-ending winter, it is not quite as bad as I feared.
  • And finally, 'Elvis has left the building!!'  Elvis is our extremely flatulent cat, he has not moved from my bed, other than to eat and....(you know the rest), since mid-October but he is currently spread out in the sunshine on the trampoline. However this is not necessarily a plus for the local mouse population!!?!

Types of reuseable nappies

Fitted, shaped, two-part nappy

This is the modern cloth nappy  it looks like a disposable in shape, can be made from a variety of materials such as terry cotton, hemp or bamboo. They are closed using either poppers, aplix/Velcro (or other hook and loop fastener), or with a snappi nappi/nappi nippa the new alternative to a nappy pin. This type of nappy will have numerous layers of cloth, usually with an integrated booster sewn in. It may be lined with fleece or suede-cloth to keep baby's bottom dry, if not you can add a liner.

  •  More absorbent so great for explosions!!! and night time.

Pocket Nappy

These nappies have the same shape as a fitted/shaped nappy but at the back there is an opening 'pocket' between the inner and outer of the nappy for you to add your own inserts as required.
  • Quick and easy to use.Great for on the go and for childcare. This is a very quick drying system as all the components are separated.

 All in One

This is a nappy that again is shaped similarly to a disposable and has the absorbent part of the nappy covered by a waterproof layer sewn together so ready to  put the nappy on .  As they are all one part this is the slowest drying option.
  • Most like a disposable.Quick and easy to use.Great for on the go and for Longer to dry.

Nice cup of tea ?
I couldn't get through my day without a cup of tea. After a sleepless night it wakes me up.When I'm flagging after the afternoon school run it gives me the oomph to get cooking the kid's dinner. However is the cup of tea as innocent as we may think. If you are breastfeeding

it might be the time to cut back.
We don't have a UK guideline for a safe amount of caffeine for breastfeeding mums. In the US, no more than 300mg of caffeine a day is recommended. That's about the equivalent of two cups of filter coffee, or four mugs of tea, a day.

More than this amount of caffeine is unlikely to harm your baby. However, if your baby seems very unsettled or restless, or finds it difficult to sleep

, try cutting back on caffeine. Just have just the occasional cup of tea or coffee, change to decaff or cut it out of your diet completely, and see if it makes a difference.
Hot drink scalds are one of the most common childhood injuries and the leading cause of children being admitted to burns services. Every day in the UK, 45 children are taken to A&E departments with scalds from hot drinks - that's around 16,500 a year.1 In 2010-11 almost 1,200 children under the age of 15 were admitted to hospital in England and Wales with hot drink scalds.2
Almost nine in ten serious scalds from hot drinks involve under fives. In fact, hot drinks are the number one cause of scald injuries among young children.1 Hot drink scalds peak at the age of one or two, with most of these accidents happening when babies and toddlers pull a mug of tea or coffee onto themselves.
Right that's me done I'm off for a cuppa!
